To Be or Not To Be
“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalms 46:10 (NKJV)
I love that verse. And, you know I love words. So, it won’t surprise you that I reached for my good ole Merriam Webster to find out what “MW” had to say about the word “still”. There were a bunch of definitions, but these three really spoke to me:
- Quiet
- Motionless
- Free from noise or turbulence
I am rarely any of those things. And it’s especially difficult during the holidays.
Oh, I believe with all my soul that “Jesus is the Reason for the Season”. Yet, sometimes instead of focusing on Him like I should, my focus tends to shift towards the “Countdown to Christmas” things I have yet to do…by the way, did you see that sale ad in the Sunday paper? I mean, 50% off plus an additional 25% not to mention a price match, extra rewards points, a rebate, AND a free gift?!
You know what I’m talking about.
My sweet Grandma B used to say that the devil keeps us extra busy during the Christmas season so that our eyes are on everything but Jesus.
Um-hmm. She was right.
In my desire to be still, I am anything but.
Yet, I am so grateful that God knows this. He knows my heart. He knows your heart. And guess what?
He loves us…still.
Father God…Thank you for Jesus. Forgive me when the loudness of my own little world drowns out the quietness of You. Remind me as I go through the seemingly endless motions of my day, that it really is okay to stop, even for a minute, and be motionless. And please free me from the noise or turbulence or anything else that keeps me from focusing on You…not just at Christmastime, but all the time.
Thank you, God, for helping me
to be
to be
to be still.
